The fourth-generation TL is Acura's performance leader due to its significantly increased handling capabilities, advanced technology and head-turning new styling.
The 2009 TL is available in two distinctly different models: the TL and TL SH-AWD. There's now a choice of two VTEC powertrains and the TL's first-ever application of Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).
Also new are its increased size, further upgraded suspension, Sequential SportShift transmission, and an available comprehensive Technology Package. And with the addition of an available premium 10-speaker surround sound audio system and a new AcuraLink weather feature, the 2009 TL is the most technologically advanced sedan in Acura's history.
Standard among the two VTEC choices is a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 280-horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque coupled with a 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic transmission (with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control). Not only is this an athletic engine, it's also fuel efficient, with projected EPA gas mileage ratings of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg on the highway.
The second choice, likely to attract the more performance oriented drivers, is the TL SH-AWD. Its equipped with an all-new 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 305-horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It also has additional high-performance features such as Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control on both the intake and exhaust valves as well as a special high-flow dual exhaust system.
Even with all the upgrades in the SH, the projected EPA fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway is largely unchanged from the regulat TL. This engine also meets California's CARB LEV II ULEV emissions certification.
But the biggest plus of the TL SH-AWD is its Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. For example, during aggressive cornering, the SH-AWD system shifts more torque to the outside rear wheel while still maintaining drivetrain torque front to rear and left to right. The result is very balanced, faster and more precise turning all-wheel-drive performance.
The 2009 TL's increased exterior dimensions also benefit ride quality and passenger comfort. The exterior length has been increased by 6 inches, the width by 1.8 inches and the height by 0.5-inches.
While one benefit of the larger body is the obviously increased interior roominess, it has also allowed for a 1.4-inch longer wheelbase to improve ride quality and a significantly wider track. Again, this is a further enhancement to cornering power. The TL is also equipped with a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a multi-link independent system in the rear.
The long list of premium standard features includes a power moonroof, dual-zone adaptive climate control, 10-way adjustable (8-way power seat with 2-way power lumbar support) driver seat, 8-way adjustable power front passenger seat, and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission.
Also standard is an 276-watt 8-speaker audio system with a 6-disc CD changer, AM/FM radio, XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, USB port and AUX jack connectivity, and a HandsFreeLink wireless telephone interface.
Available on both the TL and TL SH-AWD is a Technology Package that includes a voice recognition Navigation System, AcuraLink real-time traffic reporting and radar weather mapping, an Acura/ELS Surround premium audio system, a Keyless Access System and pushbutton ignition. Premium Milano leather seating is also included in the Technology Package.
Update: Weak Economy Leads To Lower Acura TL Prices:
