What is it? A car or an SUV? Well, it's somewhere in between ... a little of both. While technically the X6 is in the SUV segment, even BMW doesn't feel comfortable calling it one. They call it a "Sports Activity Coupe" (even though it has four doors). The truth is, despite its nearly 5,000 pound curb weight, the X6 certainly drives much more like a sport sedan than an SUV.
Whatever label you want to attach to it, the bottom line is that the 2009 BMW X6 is a unique vehicle with high level handling capabilities, spacious and comfortable front seats, a quiet ride, and a powerful available twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower.
The 2009 X6 is available in two trims: xDrive35i and xDrive50i.
Standard Features:
Standard features on the xDrive35i include 19 inch alloy wheels, leather interior, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, driver memory settings, sunroof, adaptive xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers, parking assist sensors, iDrive multimedia interface, and a 12-speaker sound system with a CD/MP3 player and an auxiliary audio jack.
The xDrive50i model, in addition to everything above, adds a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic and multicontour seats (both available on the xDrive35i as options).
Options:
You can add features to the X6 through either packages or stand-alone options.
There's a Premium package that adds a power liftgate, front-seat lumbar support, auto-dimming mirrors, ambient lighting, Bluetooth, and a cargo-area rail system. The Premium Sound package features 16 speakers, a 6-disc CD changer and an iPod/USB adapter.
There's also a Sport package that includes front sport seats as well as adaptive suspension dampers and stabilizer bars.
Heated seats, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and rear-seat climate control are other optional features found in packages.
Available stand-alone options include 20 inch wheels, active steering, a rearview camera, keyless entry and ignition, a head-up display, leather-wrapped dashboard and center console, a rear-seat entertainment system, and satellite and HD radio.
Engines And Gas Mileage:
Powering the 2009 X6 xDrive35i is a 3.0 liter twin-turbo inline-6 engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The xDrive35i has been timed going from 0 to 60 mph in a fleet 6.3 seconds.
The X6 xDrive50i is equipped with a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque ... and a 0 to 60 time of just 5.3 seconds. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. And all X6 models send power to all four wheels.
The EPA estimated gas mileage for the xDrive35i is 15 mpg city and 20 mpg on the highway. Fuel economy on the xDrive50i dips to 12 mpg city and 18 mpg highway.
Safety Features:
Standard safety features on all X6 models include antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, hill descent control, front-seat side airbags, active front head restraints, front and rear side curtain airbags, and Dynamic Performance Control (improves stability and traction by redirecting power to individual wheels).
Update: Weak Economy Leads To Lower X6 Prices:
BMW's sales have been weak for months now, evidence of a continuing poor economy and an especially weak car buying trend. And the current combination of fierce dealer competition and a soft market has created an ideal opportunity for nailing down great deals.
