The highly anticipated 2009 Cadillac CTS has a hard act to follow, After all, last year's CTS was the 2008 Motor Trend Car of the Year. But it appears the new CTS is up to the task. In fact, this sport sedan's blend of performance, design and technology may well help it join the world's most sought after cars.

Not only does Cadillac already have a good thing going with this vehicle, but they've upped the ante still further with the introduction of the top-of-the-model-line 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. This 550-horsepower sedan is Cadillac’s most impressive combination of performance and luxury.

The CTS has also earned high marks for safety. Six standard air bags, including a segment-first dual depth passenger front air bag, active headrests and head curtain side air bags, helped the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety make it a Top Safety Pick.

The CTS’ exterior is noted for its athletic form and sculpted fenders, which feature side air extractors; and an UltraView sunroof is available, which spans both front and rear seats. The CTS is also equipped with high-performance brake calipers and rotors, with either seven-spoke, 17-inch wheels or nine-spoke, 18-inch wheels.

The interior of the CTS boasts an impressive combination of style, technology and comfort. Analog instrumentation is enhanced with bright accents. There's an integrated center stack design, in either a satin metallic or genuine Sapele Pommele wood finish. Overall, there's most definitely a sporty "cockpit" feel.

The CTS offers impressive power, yet maintains fuel economy and lowers emissions through Direct injection technology. This more precise fuel delivery system increases combustion efficiency. The CTS also runs on less expensive regular unleaded gasoline (although Cadillac recommends premium for the CTS-V).

In Consumer Guide testing, gas mileage for the base CTS with automatic transmission averaged 19.1 mpg. A Direct Injection CTS with the automatic averaged 22.2 mpg. These are very respectable results for a vehicle with this level of performance capabilities.

Rear-wheel drive is standard while all-wheel drive is available on all but the CTS-V. Base CTS models have a 263-horsepower 3.6 liter V6 engine. Uplevel Direct Injection models have a 304-horsepower 3.6 liter V6.

All CTS engines are matched with fuel-saving six-speed transmissions. There's also an Aisin six-speed manual option as well as an electronically controlled Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic, featuring driver controlled clutch-free manual shifting (steering wheel-mounted shifters are included in the Summer Performance package).

The three available suspension tuning levels include the FE1 with 17-inch wheels, the FE2 with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires, and the performance-oriented FE3 with 18-inch summer performance tires.

New for 2009 is the Cadillac CTS- V, an impressive combination of sports car performance and sedan luxury.

The CTS-V delivers 556-horsepower at 6,100 rpm, making it the most powerful production Cadillac ever made and one of the world’s fastest and most performace oriented sedans.

But there's more than just power to the CTS-V. It also includes a host of technical and design enhancements, including Magnetic Ride Control (fast reacting suspension technology), Brembo brakes and automatic transmission paddle-shift control. Electronic sensors on all four wheels literally "read the road" and make constant adjustments which enhances performance during hard cornering, acceleration, braking and other dynamic maneuvers.

With its 6.2 liter supercharged V-8 engine, the CTS-V goes from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, putting this vehicle among the most elite worldwide.

Gas mileage for the CTS-V is not yet available, and is unlikely to be an issue for those drivers who want to own a 556-hp vehicle.
