The 2009 Dodge Challenger adds new models to its lineup; the entry-level SE and mid-line R/T models now join the flagship SRT8.
Even the base level SE is equipped with a very capable 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine, coupled with a four-speed automatic transmission. The RT comes with a powerful 372-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine matched to a five-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual transmission is also available on the 5.7 liter V8, resulting in a slight boost to 376-horsepower.
The SRT8 model is equipped with a massive 425-horsepower 6.1-liter Hemi V8 coupled with either a five-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. Dodge says it will do 0-60 mph in around 5 seconds.
The 6-speed manual is a new feature for the 2009 Challenger and includes a useful hill-holder clutch that holds the brake for three seconds to help engage the car on a incline.Available safety features include ABS, an anti-skid system, traction control and curtain side airbags.
Keyless engine start is also available, as is Chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, plus a navigation system.
The Challenger's ride is surprisingly comfortable despite its emphasis on performance, absorbing bumps well across all models
Interior features of the new Challenger are nicely assembled, although there is probably too much plastic being used in the SE. That being said, the RT and SRT8 are available with chrome, faux carbon fiber, and suede accents that definitely spruce things up.
.
Overall, the interior look and feel is superior to competitors such as the Ford Mustang or Nissan 350Z.
Comfort and convenience features include keyless access and starting, remote engine start, heated power mirrors, heated front seats, a Boston Acoustics sound system, steering wheel radio controls, satellite radio, wireless cell phone link, trip computer, automatic day/night rearview mirror, compass, outside-temperature indicator, automatic headlights and a universal garage door opener.
Not surprisingly, the new 2009 Challenger isn't meant for those car shoppers looking to save on gas, particularly with the V8. But the addition of lower-priced SE and RT models increases the accessibility of this fun-to-drive performance oriented vehicle to a lot more drivers.
