2009 Dodge Grand Caravan
Features And Prices

(See Also: "The Ultimate New Car Negotiation Secret")

Noted for its powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine, outstanding safety ratings, family-friendly entertainment choices, abundant space and innovative seating options, the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan is definitely worth some serious consideration in the minivan segment.

A particularly innovative feature of the Grand Caravan is its second-row seating choices. The standard "Stow 'n Go" arrangement consists of a pair of second-row captain's chairs that disappear into the floor. And because the third row does as well (and it can be power-folding), a large flat floor space is created with up to 140 cubic feet of cargo room.

The optional "Swivel 'n Go" choice allows for the captain's chairs to be spun around to create a face-to-face traveling experience for the second and third-row passengers. A table can also be fitted between the rows.

Other Grand Caravan innovations include Sirius Satellite TV, two rear video screens (one swivels), ambient cabin lighting, spacious under-floor storage, a pop-out cargo-area-mounted flashlight and a driver-seat umbrella holder.

2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT

The new Grand Caravan is offered in three trims: C/V, SE and SXT. The C/V model is a stripped down version used primarily as a commercial vehicle only.

Standard Features:

Standard features on the more common and well-equipped SE model include full power accessories, air conditioning, keyless entry, cruise control, second-row power windows, third-row power vents, tilt steering column, Stow 'n Go second-row seats, a flip-down child mirror, CD/MP3 player and 16 inch steel wheels.

The SXT has all of the above, plus a larger engine, alloy wheels, foglamps, satellite radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel audio controls, eight-way power driver seat (manual lumbar), power-adjustable pedals, power sliding side doors, rear manual climate control, and an overhead console with storage bins and ambient lighting.

Options:

The power sliding door and rear climate control are available as options on the SE. And a sport-tuned suspension is added for those who opt for 4.0 liter V6 engine on the SXT.

There are many other available options, but most are grouped in various packages. There is a second-row bench seat available for the SE and both models can be outfitted with a power tailgate and Swivel 'n Go second-row seats. Child booster seats can also be added to Swivel 'n Go.

Either trim also has an upgraded audio system available featuring a 30GB hard drive, touchscreen controls, rearview camera and satellite radio. There's also a rear DVD entertainment system that includes the upgraded stereo and adds a 9 inch flip-down screen, two wireless headphones, remote control and a 115-volt outlet. On the SXT, the rear DVD entertainment system also features a swiveling second-row flip-down screen.

There's also a Premium Group package for the SXT that adds a power-folding third-row seat, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a nine-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth with an iPod interface (this is also a stand-alone option on all trims).

A Family Value Group package adds remote ignition, second and third-row sunshades, and a sliding front center console.

Available stand-alone options on the SXT include heated front and second-row seats, sunroof, navigation with real-time traffic, and Sirius Satellite TV (currently providing the Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel).

Engines And Gas Mileage:

Powering the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan are a choice of three V6 engines. The SE is equipped with a 3.3 liter that produces 175 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to a standard four-speed automatic transmission. The EPA gas mileage for this engine is 17 mpg city and 24 mpg on the highway.

Standard on the SXT is a 3.8 liter V6 that delivers 197 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. Available as an option is a 4.0 liter V6 that procuces 251 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. Both of these SXT engines are coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.

And both, despite different power outputs, are identically EPA gas mileage rated at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

Safety Features:

Standard safety features on all Grand Caravans include antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, and full-length side curtain airbags. Optional are second-row integrated child booster seats (requires Swivel 'n Go).

The SXT has an optional Security Group package which includes rear parking sensors, a blind spot monitoring system and Rear Cross Path (alerts of cross traffic in both directions when in reverse). A rearview camera is also available.

In government crash testing, the 2009 Grand Caravan scored a perfect five stars in every frontal and side-impact category for both driver and passengers.
