The 2009 Ford Escape has increased power by 11% to its 4-cylinder models, yet has actually improved its fuel economy at the same time. While this engine is now 2.5 liters (as opposed to 2.3), a new 6-speed transmission, refined aerodynamics and new low-rolling-resistence tires have improved estimated gas mileage by 1 mpg despite the power boost.
Models with the 3.0-liter V-6 engine will get 20% more horsepower, but will also get a 1 mpg fuel economy improvement.
The new engine improves 0-60 mph acceleration by 1.7 seconds.
The new Escape also features several chassis system upgrades to improve driving dynamics, steering response and comfort. These include a new rear stabilizer bar, revised shock absorber tuning, and a retuned steering system.
The Escape Hybrid has also been enhanced. For 2009, the Hybrid models are equipped with a new 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine designed to run on the Atkinson combustion cycle, where the power stroke is longer than the compression stroke, thereby increasing fuel economy. The Hybrid also gets a new powertrain damping system that reduces vibrations, as well as a new engine processor that smoothly transitions between the gas and electric vehicle mode.
Estimated gas mileage for the front-wheel-drive version of the Hybrid are 34 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
Also added to the 2009 Escape Hybrid is a new model, the Escape Limited Hybrid. Like its nonhybrid counterpart, features of the Limited Hybrid include 16-inch six-spoke aluminum wheels and exterior chrome accents, an AM-FM/six-CD changer, chrome and ebony interior trim, ambient lighting, heated front leather seats, keyless entry, a power moonroof and a retractable cargo area cover.
All Escape models are available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Available safety features include ABS, antiskid system, traction control, curtain side airbags, front side airbags, and tire pressure monitor.
Available options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear obstacle detection, and a navigation system.
High tech features include:
* SYNC, developed by Ford and Microsoft, is a system to control most MP3 players and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones using hands-free voice commands, and is standard on the Escape Limited and Escape Hybrid.
* SIRIUS satellite radio is featured on the Escape XLT, Limited and Hybrid with a complementary six-month subscription.
* There's an optional voice-activated navigation system, as well as an AM-FM/six-disc in-dash changer, seven speakers and a subwoofer.
* Ambient lighting is standard on the Limited and Escape Limited Hybrid models.
* An auxiliary input jack, located in the instrument panel center stack, is standard equipment for connecting MP3 players to the audio system.
* All 2009 Escape Hybrid models feature a standard 110V AC power outlet.
