The 2009 Honda CR-V represents a very nice balance of design attractiveness, practicality and ample features.
And for a compact crossover SUV (it's only about 1/2 inch longer than the Honda Civic) it's impressively earned the highest five-star crash safety rating for both front and side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the CR-V as a "Top Safety Pick."
Other safety features that go beyond conventional industry standards include the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, a pedestrian safety design, and standard Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA - an electronic stability control system).
Additional standard safety equipment includes side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors, front side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), active front seat head restraints, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
The three available CR-V models, LX, EX and EX-L (all equipped with the same high level of safety features), offer car buyers unique styling cues and features to meet either basic driving needs or more premium appointment expectations. This, coupled with the CR-V's spacious interior and car-like drive and handling, has established the CR-V as a leader in the compact SUV segment.
The CRV is equipped with a 2.4 liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine coupled with a standard five-speed automatic transmission and rated at 166-horsepower. Gas mileage for the CR-V is EPA-rated at 20 mpg city and 27 mpg (2WD), indicating a nice balance of power and fuel economy.
A fully independent suspension and highly rigid body produce a quiet cabin with smooth and agile driving dynamics.
The CR-V's available Real Time 4WD system enhances the CR-V's all-weather capabilities without the typical weight, fuel efficiency and handling setbacks that usually occur with a conventional four-wheel-drive system. Under normal conditions, this system sends 100% of the power to the front wheels. But when the front wheels lose traction, which causes faster spinning than the rear wheels, the system’s hydraulic pumps act on a center differential, sending power to the rear wheels.
Three new exterior colors are also available this year: Crystal Black Pearl, Alabaster Silver Metallic and Urban Titanium Metallic.
In addition the the standard safety features already listed, the long list of CR-V LX standard features includes power mirrors, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, daytime running lights, theft deterrent system, air conditioning, interior air filter, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, cruise control, cloth upholstery, front bucket seats with driver-seat height adjustment, center tray, split folding rear seat with pass-through, AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, digital-media player connection, tachometer, trip computer, intermittent wipers, conversation mirror, rear defogger, intermittent rear wiper/washer, floormats, and 17 inch wheels.
CR-V EX standard features adds Power sunroof, AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD/MP3 changer, steering wheel radio controls, outside-temperature indicator, variable-intermittent wipers, rear privacy glass, and alloy wheels.
CR-V EX-L standard features adds dual-zone automatic climate controls, navigation system with voice recognition, leather upholstery, heated front seats, 8-way power driver seat, center console, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated power mirrors, center-console-mounted 6-disc CD/MP3 changer, satellite radio, and a rearview camera.
Update: Weak Economy Leads To Lower CR-V Prices:
Honda's sales have been weak for months now, evidence of a continuing poor economy and an especially weak car buying trend. And the current combination of fierce dealer competition and a soft market has created an ideal opportunity for nailing down great deals.
