The new 2009 Lexus IS 250 maintains its reputation as a sharp-looking luxury sedan with a sporty performance. Though it's not trying to keep up with the BMW 328i or Infiniti G37 through twisty turns due to its smaller engine size, it's a more than capable handler that's a lot of fun to drive.
Throw in comfort, high-quality interior materials and available all-wheel drive, and the IS 250 is worthy of strong consideration.
Model changes to the new IS 250 have been restricted to some minor interior and exterior styling changes, the addition of a more advanced stability control system, slightly revised suspension tuning and the availability of a two-tone interior as an option.
The long list of standard equipment on the 2009 IS 250 includes leather upholstery, power sunroof, air conditioning w/dual-zone automatic climate controls, interior air filter, tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, cruise control, 10-way power front bucket seats with lumbar adjustment, trunk pass-through, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors with turn signals, remote keyless entry, keyless starting, universal garage door opener, AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD/MP3 changer, digital-media player connection, tachometer, variable-intermittent wipers, automatic day/night rearview mirror, compass, fog lights, outside-temperature indicator, rear defogger, automatic headlights, theft-deterrent system, and 17 inch alloy wheels.
The AWD model has all of the above, plus heated/cooled front seats.
Optional features include adaptive cruise control, 18 inch alloy wheels, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, park assist, heated front seats (on the rear-wheel-drive model), driver seat memory, rain-sensing wipers, power rear sunshade, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio and a Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system.
An available X Package, a sport suspension package for the rear-wheel-drive versions, includes firmer suspension calibrations, aluminum pedals, 18 inch wheels, and sport-biased tires.
The interior of the IS 250 is an attractive, sporty design comprised of top-notch materials. The look is distinquished and build quality is excellent. In addition, Lexus' electronics interface is considered one of the best in the industry, and its optional touchscreen navigation system has received very positive "user-friendly" kudos.
Powering the 2009 Lexus IS 250 is a 2.5 liter V6 engine that produces 204 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Choice of transmissions include a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. However, the AWD only comes with the automatic.
The 2009 IS 250 with the manual transmission has been timed going from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds.
EPA gas mileage estimates for an IS 250 with rear-wheel-drive and automatic transmission are 21 mpg city and 29 mpg on the highway. The manual shifter reduces these numbers to 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Fuel economy for the AWD IS 250 is 20 mpg city and 26 highway.
Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and daytime running lights. An optional safety feature is a pre-collision system (PCS) that uses radar to detect obstacles in front of the car. If the computer ascertains an unavoidable collision, it automatically stiffens the suspension, retracts the front seatbelts and initializes brake assist.
Update: Bad Economy Leads To Lower IS 250 Prices:
Lexus' sales have been weak for months now, evidence of a continuing poor economy and an especially weak car buying trend. There was a small bounce during the "Cash For Clunkers" program, but the market quickly returned to its previous poor condition.
And once again, the combination of fierce competition and a soft market has created an ideal opportunity for nailing down great deals.
