The Mitsubishi Eclipse has been a popular and affordable sport coupe for almost 20 years. Not too many of its competitors can boast such a track record. And the 2009 model will keep this tradition intact.
Overall, the new Eclipse is largely unchanged from the 2008. While the powertrain and interior remain the same, there's been several attractive exterior styling changes. Also new is standard stability control and a new dual exhaust system (which also adds 2 horsepower) for the V6 GT. Lastly, the SE and SE-V6 models have been discontinued.
For 2009, the Eclipse hatchback sport coupe is available in two trims: GS and GT. And there's also a four-seat convertible, the Eclipse Spyder,
Standard features on the GS include full power accessories, 17 inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, cruise control, 50/50-split-folding rear seats, and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and MP3 capability.
The GT sports a V6 engine, 18 inch alloys, xenon HID headlamps, foglamps, a rear spoiler, larger rear brakes, a compass, and outside temperature display.
Option packages for the Eclipse coupe include the Sun and Sound package (available on both GS and GT models), which includes a sunroof, rear window wiper, auto-dimming rearview mirror, aluminum pedals, rear cargo shelf, 650-watt Rockford Fosgate premium audio system with satellite radio, six-CD/MP3 changer, 10-inch subwoofer, and steering wheel audio controls.
Available on the GT only, the Premium Sport Package includes most Sun and Sound features, but also adds heated side mirrors, heated leather front seats, automatic climate control, and a power driver seat.
Powering the Eclipse GS is a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine that produces 162 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It's coupled to a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic (with manual shift control).
The GT is equipped with a 3.8 liter V6 engine that delivers 265 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. It's mated to a standard six-speed manual, with a five-speed automatic available as an option.
The EPA gas mileage rating for the Eclipse GS is 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway with the manual transmission. The automatic gets 20 mpg city and 26 mpg on the highway. The V6 GT is rated at 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the manual while the automatic gets 17 and 25.
Standard safety features on the 2009 Eclipse includes antilock brakes (ABS), front seat-mounted airbags, side curtain airbags, and open front head restraints. In addition, stability control is standard on the GT.
The 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder is also available in GS and GT trim levels.
Standard features on the Spyder GS includes a power cloth soft top, air conditioning, 17 inch alloy wheels, foglights, keyless entry, and a nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate stereo with a subwoofer and in-dash six-CD changer.
The Eclipse Spyder GT differs from the GS in most of the sames ways as the coupe. It adds a V6 engine, 18 inch alloys, xenon headlamps, foglamps, larger rear brakes, a compass, and outside temperature display.
The Spyder GS has an available Deluxe Leather Package that adds upgrades such as leather upholstery, heated side mirrors and heated front seats.
The Spyder GT has an optional Premium Sport Package featuring all of the above, plus automatic climate control, a six-way power driver seat, machine-finish wheels, and a removable wind deflector.
The base Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS comes with the 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine and standard five-speed manual transmisson (with an optional four-speed automatic). Fuel economy is 19 mpg city, and 26 mpg highway.
The Spyder GT also gets the powerful 265 horsepower 3.8 liter V6 that's in the hardtop, along with the six-speed manual transmission (optional five-speed automatic). Gas mileage for the Spyder GT is 16 mpg city and 24 highway on both the manual and automatic.
Standard safety features on the 2009 Eclipse Spyder include antilock disc brakes and head and torso coverage front-seat side airbags. The GT also comes with stability control and traction control.
Update: Bad Economy Leads To Lower Eclipse Prices:
Mitsubishi's sales have been weak for months now, evidence of a continuing poor economy and an especially weak car buying trend. And the current combination of fierce competition and a soft market has created an ideal opportunity for nailing down great deals.
