For the 2009 model year, Nissan has added an even more economical version of the Versa: a fairly no-frill 1.6 liter base model priced at under $10,000.
The two other trims, the S and SL, have been carried over virtually unchanged, with their fiesty 1.8 liter engines that offer a nice balance of fuel efficiency and performance.
And while the Base Versa is quite sparse when it comes to amenities, available features on the other models include Bluetooth, keyless ignition/entry, sunroof, satellite radio, iPod integration and upgraded speakers.
Overall, the compact 2009 Versa is offered in three trim levels; the 1.6, the 1.8 S and the SL, the latter two offer both sedan and hatchback choices.
The 1.6 Base is powered by a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 107 horsepower and is matched to a 5-speed manual transmission. Standard features include 14 inch wheels, tilt steering wheel, cloth upholstery, front bucket seats, tachometer, variable-intermittent wipers, rear defogger, and a theft-deterrent system.
The 1.6 sedan comes with the same engine, but offers a choice between the 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. It also adds air conditioning and an interior air filter.
The 1.8 S trim level is equipped with a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine that produces 122 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a four-speed automatic is optional.
Other standard S features include 15 inch wheels, air-conditioning, power mirrors, a 60/40-split-folding rear seatback (in the hatchback), tilt steering wheel, cargo cover (hatchback), intermittent rear wiper/washer (hatchback). and a four-speaker stereo with CD player.
An available Power Package adds power windows, power locks, rear door map pockets and remote keyless entry. Cruise control is also available as an option.
Standard on the Versa SL are all of the optional features above, plus 15 inch alloy wheels, driver seat height adjustment, 60/40-folding rear seats (sedan) upgraded cloth upholstery, soft pad door armrests, a rear-seat center armrest, and a six-speaker AM/FM radio with an in-dash 6-disc CD/MP3 changer and digital-media player connection.
An optional Convenience Package is available on the SL which includes keyless ignition, Bluetooth, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. Other available options include a sunroof, satellite radio, iPod integration (requires satellite radio) and a sound system with a 100-watt Rockford Fosgate subwoofer and upgraded speakers.
There's also a Sport Package for the Versa SL Hatchback that adds a rear roof spoiler, lower body kit and foglights.
Interior accent lighting is also available as an option on all Versas.
The Versa SL hatchback comes with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that improves both fuel economy and driving performance.
Gas mileage for the 1.6 liter four cylinder engine (manual only) is 26 mpg city and 34 mpg on the highway. For the 1.8 liter Versa it's 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway with the four-speed automatic. The gas mileage for the Versa SL with CVT is 27 mpg city and 33 highway.
Standard safety features include front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. And antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist are an available option on all Versas.
