The 2009 Toyota RAV4 is once again a top pick in the crossover SUV segment due to its roomy functionality, easy maneuverability, and fuel economy.

And not resting on its laurels, the 2009 RAV4 gets a more powerful four-cylinder engine, restyled and modernized bumpers and grille, and active headrests for the front seats.

Even with the four-cylinder engine's power boost to 179 horsepower, gas mileage performance was still able to slightly increase. And there's even an available childrens-size third-row seat available.

The 2009 RAV4 is offered in three trims: base, Sport and Limited. Seating for five is standard, however, there's a third-row seat available as an option on the base and Limited models to increase capacity to seven.

Standard features on the base RAV4 include keyless entry, full power accessories, cruise control, 16 inch steel wheels (17 inch alloys are optional), a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and a CD/MP3 player with six-speakers and an auxiliary audio jack.

The Sport model adds rear tinted windows, a sport-tuned suspension, 18 inch alloy wheels, foglights, heated side mirrors and several distinct exterior stylings.

The top-of-the-line Limited trim features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 17 inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an in-dash six-CD changer with satellite radio (optional on the other trims).

Other optional features include a Sport Appearance Package for the four-wheel drive V6 models that adds run-flat tires, a spare-tireless rear door, and an upgraded sound system with a six-CD changer and satellite radio.

Options on both the Limited and Sport models include leather seating, power driver seat, sunroof, back-up camera and an upgraded nine-speaker audio system with satellite radio and Bluetooth.

Heated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system are also available as options on the Limited.

The standard engine on the 2009 RAV4 is a new 2.5 liter four-cylinder that produces 179 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. This is mated with a standard four-speed automatic transmission.

Also available as an option on all models is a 3.5 liter V6, delivering an athletic 269 horsepower and 246 lb-ft of torque, that is coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. The V6 4WD RAV4 goes from 0 - 60 mph in an impressive 7.2 seconds.

All RAV4s are also available with either front or four-wheel drive.

The EPA gas mileage estimate for a four-cylinder, front-drive RAV4 is 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The gas mileage for the 4WD model is 21 mpg city and 27 mpg on the highway.

The efficient V6 gets nearly the same fuel economy as the four-cylinder engine with gas mileage of 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway for the front-drive version, and 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for the four-wheel drive.

Standard safety features on all RAV4s include antilock disc brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, active front headrests, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. V6 models and/or those with optional third-row seats also are equipped with hill-start assist and downhill assist control.

In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests, the RAV4 received five stars for driver protection in frontal impacts and four stars for front passenger protection. It also earned five stars for both front and rear-occupant protection in side impact tests.
