Review: 2010 Lincoln MKZ Features, Listed Prices, Invoice

The 2010 Lincoln MKZ is a midsize premium sedan noted for its smooth ride, capable handling, long feature list and decidedly upscale cabin.

Sporting a competent 3.5 liter V6 engine and a nice balance of ride comfort and handling performance, it's the newly redone interior that stands out the most for the 2010 model year. In fact, it's every bit as nice as the one found in Lincoln's much more expensive top-line MKS sedan.

Other fairly significant changes for the 2010 MKZ include a gas mileage performance improvement, a refreshed exterior design, some additional features and a new optional Sport Appearance package.

Trims, Standard Features And Options:

The MKZ is offered in a single trim with upscale standard features that include leather upholstery, heated and cooled power front seats with memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, foglamps, 17 inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, the Sync multimedia integration system and an 11-speaker audio system with a 6-disc CD changer, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack.

Also available is the new the Sport Appearance package which adds upgraded leather, 18 inch alloy wheels, interior aluminum trim accents and a unique grille.

Other available options are stand-alone and include a back-up camera, a sunroof, a blind-spot warning system, xenon headlamps, chrome wheels, Sirius Travel Link with real-time traffic and weather, a THX-certified surround-sound audio system and a voice-activated hard-drive-based navigation system with 10 gigs of music storage.

Engines, Powertrain And Gas Mileage:

Powering the 2010 Lincoln MKZ is a 3.5 liter V6 engine that generates 263 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. It's mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission that's programmed to optimize fuel efficiency. While front-wheel drive is standard, there's an available AWD system that's electronically controlled to transfer power from side to side as well as from front to rear.

The EPA-estimated gas mileage for a front-wheel-drive MKZ is a respectable 18 mpg city and 28 mpg on the highway, significantly better than last year's model. The AWD version comes in slightly lower at 17 mpg city and 24 highway.

Safety:

Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), electronic traction control, stability control, front-seat side impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system.

In government crash tests, the 2010 MKZ received perfect five-out-of-five star ratings for both driver and passenger protection in frontal-impacts. In side-impact protection, the MKZ received five stars for front occupants and four for rear occupants.

Interior:

One of the 2010 MKZ's top attributes is its stylish, refined and well-made cabin. The materials quality is high-grade and the overall look and feel of the interior is clearly modeling the top-of-the-line MKS sedan. Seating, both front and rear, is comfortable and supportive, while overall space is an advantage over some compact rivals. There's plenty of front passenger room and the backseat is fully usable.

Instruments, gauges and displays are well positioned and easy to use, while the Sync system is especially useful and user-friendly.

Drive:

The MKZ's drive quality is smooth and compliant while still managing to handle well through tight corners, thanks to its responsive steering and solid body control. The V6 engine also provides brisk acceleration. Overall performance is capable and satisfying, yet it does not necessarily stand out as special in this very competitive segment.

Update: Weak Economy Leads To Lower MKZ Prices:

Lincoln's sales have been on the weak side historically for close to the past two years now, right along with the other car brands and evidence of a continuing slow economy.

They've recently made some progress in offsetting at least some of the market weakness through strong incentives and easier-to-get discounts. The bottom line? The current combination of a soft market along with intense dealer competition has created the perfect opportunity for nailing down some great deals.

Car dealers will "wheel and deal" bigtime right now if you know how to push their buttons.
