The 2010 Scion xD hatchback is a vehicle that gets high scores for usefulness and individualism. It offers a nice array of standard features, a host of impressive customization options, high-tech-stereo systems, a stylized exterior design, good gas mileage and a versatile sliding/reclining backseat.

Manufactured by Toyota, the four-door xD is basically a slightly more roomy and powerful Toyota Yaris, with the same wheelbase but 4 inches longer. It does not, however, have the Yaris's somewhat misplaced center-dash instrument and gauge display. And while the 2010 xD certainly isn't intended to impress with sporty road manners, it is an able and competent compact, nonetheless.

Particularly appealing is its long list of dealer-installed options that enable owners quite a bit of leeway in putting their own personable stamp on their vehicles. These include TRD performance upgrades, a spoiler, a special ambient lighting system, sound system upgrades, premium shift knobs, a sport steering wheel, sport pedals and illuminated doorsill logos.

While the xD makes a solid pick in this segment, other customizeable choices worthy of consideration include the Kia Soul and Nissan Cube, while the Honda Fit is perhaps the overall hatchback leader.

Trims, Standard Features And Options:

The 2010 Scion xD, a four-door subcompact hatchback, comes already well-equipped with standard features including full power accessories, cruise conrol, air conditioning, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, 16-inch steel wheels with three choices of covers, a tilt steering wheel and a 6-speaker CD/MP3 Pioneer audio system with an electroluminescent screen, a subwoofer RCA output and iPod/USB connectivity.

There's also an optional Alpine stereo system with the original speaker components but also with a 4.3-inch color touchscreen and both front and rear RCA outputs, plus Media Expander technology which enhances the audio quality of compressed digital music. Also available with the Alpine system is an optional plug-in navigation system. Other available options include TRD performance parts and a wide selection of custom add-ons.

Engines, Powertrain And Gas Mileage:

Powering the 2010 xD is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with either a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic. The fiesty xD goes from a standstill to 60 mph in a very respectable 8.4 seconds with the manual transmission ... even several tenths faster than the Fit.

The EPA-estimated gas mileage comes in at a solid 27 mpg city and 33 mpg on the highway with either transmission.

Safety:

Standard safety features on the 2010 xD include stability control, antilock brakes (ABS) with brake assist, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front active head restraints.

In government crash testing, despite its small size the xD earned five out of five stars for side impact protection and four stars for frontal impact protection.

Interior:

The xD's cabin is attractively designed and comfortable. The instruments and gauges are easy to see, while the high-tech sound systems sport impressive displays. There's ample headroom all around and rear passengers will find the accommodations particularly spacious due to the reclining seatback and sliding seat bottom. Cargo capacity totals a useful 35.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Drive:

The 2010 Scion xD's 1.8-liter engine is surprisingly peppy for this segment and the electric power steering is fairly responsive in tight cornering. No, the xD isn't for those looking for an engaging drive. But for those looking for practical transportation, the xD gets the job done ... and in a versatile and useful package.
