First of all, we just love the Ford Focus. They have excellent ratings, are performance and feature laden for an economy car, are great on gas and are a lot of fun to drive. And all of this comes with affordable pricing.
The Focus was introduced in 2000 and was a success right out of the gate. In fact, it won Edmunds.com's coveted "Editor's Most Wanted Award" for four consecutive years. And being available as either a sedan, hatchback or wagon helped it meet the needs of many different drivers.
The Focus has a European heritage that becomes evident in its performance and crisp cornering ability. Manual transmission models are particularly peppy. Acceleration from a standstill is impressive for an American car of this size. The hatchbacks are particular maneuverable and a lot of fun to drive. The 2.3 liter ST, which has replaced the SVT, is really a performance bargain.
While successful here in the states, many car buyers seemed more interested in more upscale, less gas-efficient vehicles in the early to mid 2000's. This, not being the case elsewhere in the world where gasoline prices were already well past our prices, resulted in the Focus becoming one of Ford's top worldwide sellers.
However, with surging gas prices here in the U.S. in the last couple of years (while lower right now, how many really believe they'll stay here?), the attractive merits of the Ford Focus have been 'rediscovered', making it a hot item as both a new or used purchase. And 2008 saw Ford introduce yet another body style, a 2-door coupe.
Incidentally, the gas mileage for the Focus is 23 - 26 mpg city and 32 - 35 mpg highway. Couple this with the vehicle's fairly athletic performance abilities (particularly with the 5-speed manual), more than adequate amenities and affordable pricing, and the Focus is definitely a car with a lot of appeal for those who believe gas prices will be staying high for a while.
Independent ratings have also been quite good. J.D. Power has given the Focus high ratings for Overall Quality, Feature And Accessory Quality and Body And Interior Quality. Cars.com has given it its "Best Bet" award and Consumer Reviews at Edmunds.com give it a more than solid 8.8 out of 10 ... and whose opinions are more worthwhile than the people who actually own one?
And here's what Edmunds.com has to say about the Ford Focus: "Regardless of trim, the Focus offers a smooth ride quality and above-average handling ability. The steering system is surprisingly quick, fluid and responsive, always providing plenty of feedback from the road surface."
In our humble opinion, the Focus makes an excellent choice as a used car purchase. It's just a lot of car for the money.
