What we like about the Jetta is its powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines. We're also big fans of the fuel-efficient TDI diesel powerplant, but we're unfortunately seeing very few of these right now. Because of high gas prices, demand for these are currently very high right and they're being sold at a premium.
We also find the Jetta extremely fun to drive. Add in a comfortable ride, very nice interior materials, a way above average list of standard features, and solid build quality, and you've got yourself a very solid choice as a used car purchase.
Out on the road, the Jetta provides both a comfortable ride and impressive handling.
The Jetta entered its fifth generation for the 2005 model year (this production run has carried throgh to the current model). This Jetta version is larger, having increased the dimensions to a midsize from a compact.
The performance remains quite capable while the ride is still smooth and quiet. Big pluses for this generation include more upscale interiors and improved rear seat passenger space.
Powering the Value Edition and 2.5 trims is a 150-hp 2.5 liter incline 5-cylinder engine. Used Jetta shoppers should note that these represent a significant improvement from the previous base models in terms of power and are still very well-equipped. For those seeking superior fuel economy, the Jetta TDI comes with a 100-hp 1.9 liter diesel engine which increases gas mileage into the 30's.
Shoppers interested in better driving performance and overall road manners may want to check out the 2.0T or GLI models. Both of these are outfitted with a direct-injected 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine with impressive torque band. And they get better gas mileage than the base engine at the same time. Driving enthusiasts would probably most prefer the GLI due to its tighter suspension and more responsive steering.
In 2008, Volkswagen revised the trim levels, boosted the base engine's output by 20 horsepower and made the GLI its own separate model. The current VW Jetta sedan is available in S, SE, Wolfsburg Edition, TDI, TDI Cup "Street" Edition and SEL trim levels, while the wagon (Sportwagen) can be found only in S, SE and TDI trims.
Both S and SE models, along with the SEL sedan, come with a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard with this engine, while there's also an optional 6-speed automatic. Wolfsburg Jettas are powered by the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 200-horsepower, and is paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or the optional "DSG" dual-clutch automated manual transmission.
Overall, we're pretty big fans of the Jetta and can make a number of suggestions to help you save when buying one.
