Chrysler has announced a new all-electric vehicle set to be released by its GEM (Green Eco Mobility) subsidiary in 2009: the GEM Peapod.
The vehicle has an innovative "pod-like" futuristic design reflecting its environment-friendly nature. Additionally, many of its components will be made from recycled and recyclable materials.
The Peapod will run on six 12-volt batteries taking 6 to 8 hours to recharge from empty with a driving range of 30 miles. With its limited range and 25 mph top speed, the Peapod is best suited for short neighborhood trips, such as going to school or commuting to a nearby work location. It's also expected to be useful in gated communities, corporate complexes, college campuses, resorts and other locations where short distance trips are common.

“We have evolved the GEM design language to better reflect its eco-friendly performance and its upbeat, positive image,” said Peter Arnell, Chrysler LLC’s Chief Innovation Officer. “These vehicles use no petrol and emit no pollutants. So whether it’s a trip around the neighbourhood or the drive to school or work, the GEM Peapod is the ideal way to contribute to a greener planet, and a healthy lifestyle."
Despite its petite size of 143.6 inches long, 56.5 inches wide and 70.5 inches in height, the Peapod's open interior design allows it to seat four passengers. The interior will also feature iPod integration as well as hands-free iPhone operation.
The Peapod will also be equipped with regenerative braking for extending battery life and can be charged from any 110-volt standard American household outlet. No pricing information has yet been released.
