DaimlerChrysler replaced the old Cherokee in 2002 with a slightly larger SUV, the Liberty. Built in Toledo, Ohio, Jeep claimed the Liberty was the stiffest Jeep ... as well as the first with rack-and-pinion steering.
The performance of an automatic model with a V6 engine is better than most, but not exceptional. The ride is smooth and surprising quiet. Drivability off-road is exceptional and this is really where the Liberty shines brightest. It's one of the best in this category, although while acceptable, it's not quite as comfortable for passengers in the back seat when the going gets rough.
That being said, the seats are very comfortable offering excellent support. And there's plenty of both headroom and legroom. In addition to running very quietly, the Liberty has pretty nearly eliminated that four-wheel-drive drone in low range.
Overall, the Liberty is solidly constructed and easy to drive and we think it makes a good choice as a used SUV purchase.
