This MR2 is equipped with a 138-horsepower, 1.8-liter, dual-overhead-cam, four-cylinder engine. It was adapted from the engine used in the Celica. Operated by computer, the sequentially shifting manual gearbox replaces the clutch and gear selector with a single shifter. Toyota says the MR2 Spyder goes from zero to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds ... and we believe it. :-)
This Spyder is certainly a blast on the road. We'd definitely put it among the more fun-filled two-passenger models we've had, and we've had quite a few. While there's no denying the interior is tight for taller people, and the trunk (if you can call it one), is nearly microscopic, driving this car with its "Boxster-like" moves makes up for a few drawbacks ... not to mention its much more "budget-minded" price.
With its precise steering, tight holding through the curves, and ability to handle challenging situations, I guess we'd call this a "more serious" driver's automobile.
