The Cadillac SRX has been totally redesigned for 2010. The luxury crossover SUV has been down-sized and attractively restyled with distinctive yet edgy "Cadillac lines", pumped up with additional luxury features, and further upscaled with a higher-quality interior.

Gone is the wagonlike look of old. Instead, it's similar to a smaller version of the Escalade ... a winning design. And its new five-passenger platform is available in both front-wheel and or all-wheel drive.

Always thought highly of by most "experts" in the past, the new and improved SRX is now likely bound for wider consumer acceptance with its smaller dimensions, quiet ride, impressive features and stylish cabin.

Standard Features And Options:

2010 Cadillac SRX Premium Collection

The 2010 Cadillac SRX is available in four trims: Base, Luxury Collection, Performance Collection and Premium Collection.

Standard features on the already well-equipped Base model include 18 inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, an 8-way power driver seat, an electronic parking brake, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear climate vents with separate fan control, 60/40-split-folding and reclining rear seats, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system with a CD player, satellite radio and a USB jack.

The Luxury Collection model then adds LED headlight accents, leather upholstery, driver memory, remote engine start, a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, an 8-way power front passenger seat, power-adjustable pedals, wood interior trim, Bluetooth, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, front and rear parking sensors, heated power-folding exterior mirrors with driver-side auto-dimming, an adjustable-height power liftgate, and a more versatile rear storage area.

Moving up to the Performance Collection model adds foglamps, xenon headlamps with washers, 20 inch alloy wheels, variable-assist power steering, a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system and a navigation system with a back-up camera.

The top-level Premium Collection model then adds keyless entry, keyless ignition, tri-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, rear-seat audio controls and heated rear outboard seats. In addition, all-wheel-drive Performance and Premium Collection models are equipped with a sport-tuned suspension with continuously variable damping.

There are no available optional features of the Base SRX. On the Luxury Collection model, the surround-sound stereo as well as navigation are available options. There's also an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system available for any SRX outfitted with the navigation system.

Engines, Powertrain And Gas Mileage:

Powering the 2010 SRX is a 3.0 liter V6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and 223 pound-feet of torque. It's coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission (a manual transmission is not offered). Front-wheel drive is standard with this engine, while all-wheel drive is an available option on all models except the Base.

All-wheel-drive Performance and Premium Collection models are equipped with a turbocharged 2.8 liter V6, rated at 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is also mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, albeit a more responsive one than the Base model. All-wheel-drive models are also equipped with a specialized rear differential for better cornering traction.

The EPA gas mileage estimates for the base V6 engine are 18 mpg city and 25 mpg on the highway for front-drive models. All-wheel drive reduces the estimates to 17 mpg city and 23 highway. Although not yet EPA rated at the time of this writing, GM says the turbocharged SRX will get gas mileage of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.

Safety:

Standard safety features on all 2010 Cadillac SRX models include antilock disc brakes (ABS), stability control, OnStar, front seat side airbags and side curtain airbags.

Interior:

The cabin of the SRX is one of its most appealing selling points. Similar to the upscale CTS sedan, the SRX's interior is attractive and user-friendly while featuring high-quality materials and solid build quality. This is clearly a luxury vehicle.

Seating is comfortable and supportive while roominess is adequate. However, rear headroom could be an issue for tall passengers.

The SRX also has an innovative rear cargo area. The power tailgate (on all but the Base model) has a two-position height setting to prevent hitting low garage ceilings. The SRX is also equipped with a versatile U-ring track in the cargo floor to create a fence for containing fragile cargo. Total cargo capacity comes in at an average 61 cubic feet, but there's 30 cubic feet behind the rear seats.

Drive:

The 2010 Cadillac SRX provides a solid and confident drive. While not engineered as a performance-oriented vehicle, steering responsiveness is surprisingly sharp. And as a luxury vehicle, it's a quiet drive that's particularly impressive on the highway. While acceleration is competent with the 3.0 liter V6 (believed to be a scaled-down version of the strong 3.6 liter engine in the CTS), the turbocharged 2.8 liter V6 does provide a significant power boost.

Update: Bad Economy Leads To Lower SRX Prices:

Cadillac's sales have been weak for months now, evidence of a continuing poor economy and an especially weak car buying trend. There was a small bounce during the "Cash For Clunkers" program, but the market quickly returned to its previous poor condition.

And once again, the combination of fierce competition and a soft market has created an ideal opportunity for nailing down great deals.
