The Pentastar's oil cooler and filter housing sit in the engine valley and can develop leaks. Oil may accumulate before the problem becomes obvious underneath the truck.

4. EcoDiesel Engine and Emissions-System Problems
The EcoDiesel's complexity is the primary reason I'd approach it more cautiously than the gasoline engines.

Yes, a Ram 1500 can be a reliable and very long-lived pickup, but choosing the right powertrain and individual truck matters considerably. A good Ram can realistically reach 200,000 to 250,000 miles, and exceptional examples can exceed 300,000 miles.
The 2002-2008 Dodge Ram 1500 can still provide inexpensive truck capability, particularly with a healthy 5.7L Hemi. At this age, however, rust, transmission condition, cooling-system maintenance and previous use matter more than small differences between model years.
The later 2009-2018 fourth-generation trucks are especially attractive. The arrival of the Pentastar V6 and eight-speed automatic improved the lineup substantially, while Hemi buyers gained a much better transmission choice. A well-maintained 2017-2018 gasoline Ram with the eight-speed would be high on my list for proven used-truck value.
The 2019-2024 DT Ram 1500 is dramatically more refined and technologically advanced. Later examples are preferable to the first-year 2019 if all else is equal, and a gasoline truck with conventional suspension offers a sensible combination of comfort, capability and reduced complexity.
The 5.7L Hemi remains an appealing engine despite its known problems. It has enormous real-world history and legitimate 200,000-mile potential, but I'd never ignore suspicious valvetrain noise merely because many other Hemis have lasted a long time.
The 3.6L Pentastar deserves more consideration than it sometimes receives. Buyers who don't tow heavily may find that a later Pentastar with the eight-speed provides enough performance while avoiding several Hemi-specific concerns.
I'd approach the EcoDiesel more selectively. Its torque and fuel economy are attractive, but someone primarily concerned with keeping an older truck inexpensive and straightforward to repair may be better served by a gasoline Ram.
Buyer Takeaway: If reliability is the priority, I'd look first for a well-maintained later fourth-generation or later DT gasoline Ram, preferably with the eight-speed automatic, and I'd favor conventional suspension if I planned to keep the truck deep into high mileage.
