Is the Chevy Malibu Reliable?

Overall, we'd rate Chevrolet Malibu reliability as average to good, but that broad rating hides substantial differences among generations and powertrains.

A carefully selected Malibu can be an excellent used-car value. Many have exceeded 150,000 miles, and 200,000 miles is realistic for a healthy car that has received consistent maintenance.

But we'd shop more selectively than those numbers might suggest.

One reason is the enormous variety of Malibu powertrains Chevrolet used between 2004 and 2024.

An older naturally aspirated V6 Malibu, a 2014 Malibu with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 2018 Malibu with the 1.5-liter turbo, a 2.0T Premier, a Malibu Hybrid, and a 2022 Malibu with a continuously variable transmission are mechanically different vehicles.

Reliability therefore can't be judged accurately from the Malibu name alone.

Older cars increasingly suffer from age-related problems involving cooling systems, suspension components, electrical accessories, oil leaks, and corrosion. Some four-cylinder engines require attention to timing-chain condition, oil level, and oil-change history. Turbocharged models add additional heat and mechanical complexity, while later 1.5T models introduce CVT considerations.

2004-2007: Sixth-Generation Chevrolet Malibu

2007 Chevy Malibu LTZ

The redesigned 2004 Malibu introduced a substantially different car from its predecessor and was offered in both conventional sedan and Malibu Maxx hatchback configurations.

Depending on year and trim, buyers may encounter a naturally aspirated 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder, 3.5-liter V6, or performance-oriented 3.9-liter V6.

These cars are mechanically straightforward compared with much newer Malibus. There are no turbochargers, CVTs, or complicated start-stop systems to evaluate.

Today, however, age has become one of the biggest reliability concerns.

Even an exceptionally low-mileage 2004-2007 Malibu is roughly two decades old. Rubber components, seals, cooling-system parts, suspension bushings, electrical connections, and other age-sensitive components can deteriorate regardless of mileage.

2004-2007 Malibu 2.2-Liter Ecotec Reliability

The naturally aspirated 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder is relatively simple and can provide good service when maintained properly.

One area we'd investigate carefully is timing-chain condition.

The engine uses a timing chain rather than a scheduled-replacement timing belt, but that doesn't mean the system should be ignored indefinitely. Poor lubrication, extended oil-change intervals, tensioner problems, or high mileage can contribute to timing-chain wear.

Listen carefully for abnormal rattling, particularly during startup, and review the oil-change history.

Oil level matters as well. A timing-chain system depends on proper lubrication, so operating an aging engine with insufficient oil can contribute to expensive internal problems.

2004-2007 Malibu 3.5-Liter V6 Reliability

The naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 is one of the more appealing engines in this generation for buyers who don't mind higher fuel consumption.

It provides noticeably stronger acceleration than the four-cylinder and avoids the turbocharging and direct-injection complexity found in much newer Malibus.

At today's age, we'd concentrate heavily on cooling-system condition, oil and coolant leaks, engine mounts, ignition components, and maintenance history.

A smooth-running 3.5-liter with good records can still make an inexpensive transportation car, but we'd buy primarily on condition rather than reputation.

2006-2007 Malibu SS 3.9-Liter V6 Reliability

The Malibu SS used a larger 3.9-liter V6 and is much less common than ordinary Malibu models.

It offers stronger performance but shouldn't necessarily be the first choice for someone seeking the simplest possible inexpensive commuter car.

Because surviving SS models may have been driven more aggressively, inspect transmission operation, suspension condition, brakes, tires, engine mounts, and evidence of neglected maintenance.

Common 2004-2007 Chevy Malibu Problems

Buyer Tip: On a 2004-2007 Malibu, we'd rather buy a higher-mileage car with extensive maintenance records than an unusually low-mileage example that has spent years receiving little maintenance. Age-related deterioration doesn't stop because the odometer does.

Bottom Line: A well-maintained 2004-2007 Malibu can still provide inexpensive transportation, but these cars should now be judged primarily on condition. The 2.2L Ecotec deserves attention to timing-chain and oil-maintenance history, while the V6 engines can be durable choices if the rest of the car has been cared for.

2008-2012: Seventh-Generation Chevrolet Malibu

2009 Chevy Malibu LTZ

The redesigned 2008 Malibu was a major improvement in refinement, interior quality, ride comfort, and overall competitiveness.

It is also one of the more interesting Malibu generations for today's budget used-car shopper.

Depending on year and trim, engines included a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder and several V6 applications, including 3.5-liter and 3.6-liter engines.

Transmission choices changed during the generation as Chevrolet increasingly moved from four-speed automatics to six-speed units.

Because these cars are now well over a decade old, condition and maintenance history matter considerably. But a well-preserved later example can still represent good value.

2008-2012 Malibu 2.4-Liter Ecotec Reliability

The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder became the mainstream engine for this generation.

It offers reasonable fuel economy and adequate performance, but oil level and timing-chain condition deserve attention as mileage accumulates.

Some higher-mileage examples can consume oil. That's particularly important because consistently operating with insufficient oil can accelerate wear throughout the engine and timing system.

2008-2012 Malibu V6 Reliability

V6 Malibus are considerably less common than four-cylinder models but can be attractive used cars.

The 3.5-liter V6 offers straightforward naturally aspirated performance, while certain versions used the more powerful 3.6-liter V6.

We wouldn't automatically choose a V6 over a four-cylinder, but a healthy V6 with strong maintenance records can be an appealing alternative for buyers willing to accept higher fuel consumption.

With the 3.6-liter in particular, oil-change history and timing-chain condition deserve attention. Extended oil-change intervals and low oil levels aren't something we'd want to see in the service history.

2008-2009 vs. 2010-2012 Malibu Reliability

When comparing otherwise similar cars, we'd generally give the later 2010-2012 models some preference.

The first couple of years of a redesign can expose problems that are addressed as production continues, and later cars also benefited from ongoing powertrain and equipment revisions.

That doesn't make every 2008 or 2009 Malibu unreliable.

At this age, an exceptionally well-maintained 2008 can easily be a better purchase than a neglected 2012.

But if mileage, price, powertrain, maintenance history, and condition are comparable, we'd start our search with 2010-2012.

Common 2008-2012 Chevy Malibu Problems

Buyer Tip: If you're looking for an inexpensive older Malibu, we'd put a well-maintained 2010-2012 example ahead of many earlier cars. Check the oil level before starting it, listen for timing-related noise, and make sure the transmission behaves properly both cold and fully warmed.

Bottom Line: The 2008-2012 Malibu can be a good budget used sedan, with 2010-2012 being the years we'd investigate first. The 2.4L is plentiful and economical, while a well-maintained V6 can be an interesting alternative. At today's age, maintenance history remains more important than choosing a model year by reputation alone.

2013-2015: Eighth-Generation Chevrolet Malibu

2013 Chevrolet Malibu

Chevrolet redesigned the Malibu again for 2013, bringing a more modern interior, updated technology, new engines, and greater emphasis on fuel economy.

This generation had an unusually short life, which makes the differences among 2013, 2014, and 2015 especially important.

The mainstream engine became a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Chevrolet also offered a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder for buyers wanting substantially stronger performance, while Malibu Eco models used a 2.4-liter engine with eAssist mild-hybrid technology.

We'd treat those three powertrains separately rather than applying one reliability rating to the entire generation.

2013 Malibu Reliability

The 2013 Malibu was the first year of the redesign, and it's the year we'd inspect most carefully within this short generation.

First-year cars can experience more teething problems simply because so many systems have changed simultaneously.

That doesn't make the 2013 Malibu an automatic year to avoid. Plenty have provided years of service.

But if we were choosing between similarly priced and maintained 2013 and later examples, we'd generally lean toward the later car.

Pay particular attention to electrical equipment, transmission operation, engine noise, oil level, and any warning lights.

2013-2015 Malibu 2.5-Liter Reliability

The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder became the mainstream Malibu engine and is generally the powertrain we'd investigate first within this generation when reliability and simplicity are the priorities.

It avoids turbocharger complexity while providing adequate performance for ordinary driving.

That doesn't make it maintenance-free.

Oil-change history remains important, and we'd inspect for oil leaks, abnormal engine noise, rough running, cooling-system problems, and evidence of previous overheating.

Some versions also use automatic engine stop-start technology, adding another system that buyers should evaluate during the test drive.

Make sure restarting is smooth and consistent rather than accompanied by warning messages, excessive vibration, or electrical problems.

2013-2015 Malibu 2.0 Turbo Reliability

The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine transforms the Malibu into a considerably quicker sedan.

For buyers who value performance, it can be appealing. For someone whose only objective is minimizing mechanical complexity, we'd generally start with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter instead.

The turbocharger adds heat and additional components, making consistent oil maintenance particularly important.

Check for smoke, unusual turbocharger noise, oil leaks, warning lights, reduced power, and evidence that the car has been modified or tuned.

A well-maintained stock 2.0T is a very different purchase from a neglected or modified example.

2013 Malibu Eco and eAssist Reliability

The Malibu Eco used a 2.4-liter gasoline engine combined with GM's eAssist system.

This is better described as a mild hybrid than a conventional full hybrid.

The electric system assists the gasoline engine and allows features such as regenerative braking and engine stop-start, but the Malibu Eco doesn't operate like a full hybrid capable of routinely propelling itself on electric power alone.

For today's used-car shopper, the additional battery and electrical components create considerations that don't exist on a conventional Malibu.

Because the fuel-economy advantage is relatively modest compared with newer full hybrids, we'd want the eAssist system operating correctly before accepting additional complexity.

2014-2015 Malibu Reliability

We'd generally favor 2014-2015 over the first-year 2013 when comparing otherwise similar cars.

The 2014 model received significant revisions despite the generation having only recently debuted, including powertrain and fuel-economy changes.

A well-maintained 2014 or 2015 with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine can therefore be an appealing middle-ground Malibu: much newer than a 2008-2012 car but mechanically less complicated than some turbocharged versions that followed.

As always, condition overrides the calendar. We'd take a documented, carefully maintained 2013 over a neglected 2015.

Common 2013-2015 Chevy Malibu Problems and Concerns

Buyer Tip: If reliability is your priority and you're choosing among 2013-2015 Malibus, we'd start by looking for a well-maintained 2014-2015 with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine. The 2.0T offers considerably more performance, while the Eco's eAssist system adds complexity for a relatively old used car.

Bottom Line: The 2013-2015 Malibu is a mixed but potentially attractive used-car generation. We'd give 2014-2015 some preference over the first-year 2013 and generally favor the naturally aspirated 2.5L when simplicity is more important than maximum performance.

2016-2024: Ninth-Generation Chevrolet Malibu

2020 Chevy Malibu

The completely redesigned 2016 Malibu became lighter, roomier, more fuel-efficient, and considerably more sophisticated.

It also introduced a new set of powertrains that make it important to identify exactly which Malibu you're considering.

Most cars use a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder. Higher trims were available with a much more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, and Chevrolet also offered a full Malibu Hybrid for several years.

Another important change occurred later in the generation when Chevrolet paired the mainstream 1.5-liter turbo with a continuously variable transmission instead of the earlier conventional automatic.

That means a 2017 Malibu 1.5T and a 2022 Malibu 1.5T may have the same basic engine displacement but shouldn't automatically be treated as identical used-car propositions.

2016-2018 Malibu 1.5 Turbo Reliability

The turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder became the volume engine for the redesigned Malibu.

It produces adequate everyday performance while delivering good fuel economy, but it is mechanically more complicated than the naturally aspirated engines found in many older Malibus.

Consistent oil maintenance is important for both the engine and turbocharger.

We'd check for oil leaks, abnormal engine noise, smoke, turbocharger whine, hesitation, reduced power, and stored diagnostic codes.

Some small turbocharged direct-injected engines can also be sensitive to ignition, fuel-quality, and combustion-related problems, so persistent misfires or rough running shouldn't be dismissed.

These earlier ninth-generation 1.5T cars use a conventional six-speed automatic transmission rather than the CVT found on later versions.

That's an important distinction for buyers specifically searching for a Malibu without a CVT.

2016 Malibu Reliability

The 2016 Malibu was the first year of a complete redesign and deserves somewhat more scrutiny than later examples.

We wouldn't automatically avoid one, particularly if it has excellent maintenance records and passes a thorough inspection.

But when comparing otherwise similar cars, we'd generally prefer to move beyond the first production year.

Check electronics carefully, verify smooth transmission operation, evaluate the start-stop system, and make sure there are no unresolved engine or drivetrain warning lights.

2017-2018 Malibu Reliability

The 2017 and 2018 models provide an interesting option for buyers who want the newer ninth-generation Malibu but prefer the mainstream 1.5T paired with a conventional automatic rather than the later CVT.

That doesn't automatically make 2017-2018 the most reliable Malibu years.

The 1.5T still requires proper oil maintenance, and individual vehicle history remains critical.

But the combination deserves consideration from shoppers specifically concerned about long-term CVT ownership.

2016-2020 Malibu 2.0 Turbo Reliability

The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine available in higher trims produces dramatically more power than the 1.5T.

For drivers who want a quick Malibu, this is the version to consider.

Reliability-focused shoppers need to recognize the tradeoff.

The larger turbo engine is more powerful and mechanically more complex than the base powertrain, and previous driving habits can matter. A 2.0T that has been carefully maintained and left stock is preferable to one with questionable oil-change history or aftermarket tuning.

Transmission configuration also changed during the early years of the generation, so verify exactly which automatic transmission is fitted to the car you're considering.

During the test drive, look for smooth engagement, consistent shifting, no slipping or flare between gears, and no drivetrain warning messages.

2016-2019 Chevy Malibu Hybrid Reliability

The Malibu Hybrid is mechanically different enough from the regular Malibu that it deserves its own reliability assessment.

Unlike the earlier Malibu Eco's mild-hybrid eAssist arrangement, this is a full hybrid system capable of substantially greater electric assistance.

It combines a gasoline engine with electric motors, a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, power electronics, regenerative braking, and an electrically variable transmission system.

The result is excellent fuel economy, particularly in city driving.

For a used-car shopper, however, the age and condition of the hybrid components increasingly matter.

A properly operating Malibu Hybrid can be an excellent used car. But because Chevrolet sold far fewer of them than conventional Malibus, specialized replacement components and technician familiarity can be considerations as these cars age.

There isn't a predetermined mileage at which every Malibu Hybrid battery needs replacement.

Battery longevity depends on age, mileage, climate, operating conditions, and the health of the individual battery.

A high-voltage battery can remain functional well beyond 100,000 miles, but we'd evaluate battery condition rather than assuming mileage alone tells the story.

Have the hybrid system scanned for stored faults, verify that transitions between gasoline and electric operation are smooth, and make sure there are no hybrid-system warning messages.

As these cars age, we'd also consider the cost and availability of major hybrid components before buying an unusually inexpensive example with unresolved faults.

2019-2024 Malibu 1.5 Turbo and CVT Reliability

One of the most important dividing points within the ninth-generation Malibu arrived for 2019.

The mainstream 1.5-liter turbo engine was paired with a continuously variable transmission rather than the conventional six-speed automatic used previously.

This means buyers searching specifically for information about Chevy Malibu CVT reliability should concentrate on these later 1.5T models rather than assuming every ninth-generation Malibu uses a CVT.

A CVT operates differently from a conventional stepped automatic transmission. Engine speed can remain relatively constant while vehicle speed changes, which can initially feel unusual to drivers accustomed to conventional shifts.

But pronounced shuddering, slipping sensations, delayed engagement, abnormal whining, warning lights, or inconsistent acceleration deserve investigation.

Maintenance history is particularly important.

When considering a high-mileage CVT-equipped Malibu, we'd want evidence that the vehicle hasn't simply been driven for years with no attention to the transmission.

The later years of the final Malibu generation benefit from several years of production maturity.

They also represent the newest Malibus available, making age-related deterioration less significant than on earlier generations.

However, most mainstream examples combine the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine with a CVT, so those two components should be evaluated together.

For someone considering a 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, or 2024 Malibu, we'd place particular emphasis on consistent oil maintenance, turbocharger operation, transmission behavior, and electronic-system condition.

Later production doesn't guarantee reliability, but when mileage, maintenance, and price are comparable, we'd generally give a later well-maintained example some preference over an early 2016 redesign.

2024 Chevy Malibu Reliability

The 2024 Malibu was the final model year.

By this point, Chevrolet had been building the ninth-generation car for many years, so the 2024 model doesn't carry the same first-year uncertainty as the 2016 redesign.

Its relative newness also means there isn't enough high-mileage evidence to make definitive claims about how the typical 2024 Malibu will behave at 150,000 or 200,000 miles.

For buyers looking for one of the newest possible Malibus, however, the final-year model is worth considering.

We'd still evaluate the 1.5-liter turbo and CVT carefully rather than assuming a late production date eliminates the need for a mechanical inspection.

Common 2016-2024 Chevy Malibu Problems and Concerns

Buyer Tip: One of the most useful questions to ask about a ninth-generation Malibu is whether it has the six-speed automatic, later CVT, higher-output conventional automatic powertrain, or hybrid system. Don't assume two cars advertised simply as "Malibu automatics" have the same transmission.

Bottom Line: The 2016-2024 Malibu can offer a lot of car for the money, but powertrain choice matters. Early 1.5T models use a conventional six-speed automatic, later 1.5T cars use a CVT, the 2.0T offers considerably more performance with a conventional automatic, and the Hybrid has its own battery and electrified-system considerations. Best Chevy Malibu Years to Buy

The best Chevy Malibu years depend heavily on your budget and which powertrain you're considering. Because the Malibu changed engines and transmissions so often, we'd avoid choosing a year without also identifying the exact drivetrain.

For an inexpensive older Malibu, we'd give 2010-2012 particular consideration. For a somewhat newer naturally aspirated option, 2014-2015 models with the 2.5-liter engine can be appealing. Among final-generation cars, later well-maintained examples deserve attention, but buyers need to distinguish six-speed automatic models from later CVT-equipped 1.5T cars.
